Arab League adjourns permanent representatives meeting to Tuesday

CAIRO, The Arab League announced Sunday postponing the meeting of the permanent representatives to Tuesday instead of Monday amid reports about a change in the Syrian regime stance of the Arab crisis deal.

An Arab diplomatic source told KUNA that the decision was taken after signals from

the Iraqi mediators about possible Syrian acceptance to the Arab observers' protocol.

Iraq is trying to mediate an end to nine months of unrest in Syria where the UN estimates that more than 5,000 people have been killed in a regime crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.

On Saturday, Iraqi National Security Adviser Falah al-Fayadh was in Damascus where he said he had "positive" talks with Syria's president.

He then travelled to Cairo where he met Arab League chief Nabil Al-Arabi and emerged from the talks sounding upbeat.

Saturday, the Arab League threatened to take Syria to the UN for procrastinating over a deal to stop its crackdown on dissent, after Russia proposed a surprise draft resolution to the conflict.
